Albums of the year 2015

2015 ALBUMS

In previous years picking our albums of the year has been a lengthy and painful process involving bitter arguments, critiques of Tim’s body odours and uncomfortable group hugs. This year was much simpler (Tim’s got new RightGuard). We all picked a few and, well, here they are.

So, in no particular order here are SGTMT’s favourite albums of 2015.

Ghostpoet – Shedding Skin

Ghostpoet Shedding Skin was released earlier this year and quickly received critical acclaim resulting in a Mercury Prize nomination. It’s the second album from Obaro Ejimiwe (Ghostpoet) and definitely a step onwards.

We first blogged about it back in January when we had our close encounter with the Met.

If you only listen to one song make it – Off Peak Dreams

The Tallest Man on Earth- Dark Bird Is Home

tallest man on earth Wow. We were so super excited about this album we totally forgot to blog about it (you may notice this becomes a bit of a theme in this list).

We did however include songs from the album in our ‘Music we missed last month‘ posts. Twice. Wow.

Buy it on Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – Sagres

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Blur – The Magic Whip

blur What more is there to say about Blur? Nothing really, so we won’t bother. The new documentary looks horribly sycophantic enough. Is this a ‘return to form’ or back to the gold ol’ days? I really couldn’t care less.

We like it, move on nothing more to see here.

If you only listen to one song make it – Ong Ong

Courtney Barnett – Sometimes I sit and think, and sometimes I just sit

courtney barnett Courtney Barnett has featured innumerable times on this blog. We literally can’t number them. Yeah, neva. This year we’ve possessed the new music radar of toad roadkill.

Sorry. We’re not really sorry. I mean, go read Melody Maker or summat.

It’s on Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – Nobody Really Cares If You Don’t Go To The Party

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Jamie XX – in colour

in colour Jamie xx, y’know the chap, the one from The xx. Yeah him. Another Mercury nominee and rightly so, could he win the award for a second time but as a different act?

We’ve been eagerly awaiting this album for the last few years, Sleep Sound hit no.9 in our top tunes of 2014.

Get it on Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – Loud Places (ft Romy)

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

El Vy – return to the moon

return to the moon EL VY, y’know with that chap from The National. Yeah him.

We’re not fanboys or groupies but we JUST COULD NOT WAIT for the release of Return To The Moon. Yippe. Swoon. Etc. We first blogged about them back in August in the midst of another ghastly tube strike, it was all quite upsetting.

Buy on Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – Return to the Moon (Political Song for Didi Bloome to Sing, with Crescendo)

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Grimes – Art Angels

art angels Why doesn’t all pop music sound like this? Why is Justin Blunder allowed? Why do we tolerate Justin Timberland? Why is everyone called Justin?

Tom wrote about Grimes back in March whilst undergoing a sponsored silence. We didn’t sponsor him.

Buy on the Amazon.

If you only listen to one song (well, two) make it – Flesh without Blood/Life in the Vivid Dream

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Floating points – elaenia

floatingpoints Back in 2011 we told you to keep an eye on Floating Points. Boy were we right. I mean, if you hadn’t kept an eye then you would have missed Elaenia.

Wait, what’s that? You haven’t been keeping an eye out? You missed this completely? Idiots.

Get it right now on Amazon or there’ll be trouble.

If you only listen to one song make it – Nespole

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Son lux – Bones

bones This moment changes everything. Too right. As did that time Tim first started wearing velvet underwear, but let’s not go there. Please.

This album may lack the individual brilliance of Easy or Lost It For Trying but don’t be discouraged this is a fine performance from Son Lux.

Get it for Christmas from the Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – You Don’t Know Me

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Wolf Alice – my love is cool

wolf alice Another of our favourite albums of 2015 that made the Mercury Prize List. Those guys ALWAYS copy us. We’re so zietgeist, just like those lemons (you know what we mean).

We first championed Wolf Alice two and a half years ago. Wow. We’ve been eagerly awaiting their debut album ever since and when it arrived we were like ‘yay’.

Buy it on Amazon

If you only listen to one song make it – Freazy

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Youth Lagoon – Savage Hills Bathroom

youth lagoon We’ve never (at least previously) been that enamoured with Youth Lagoon. Dunno why. I blame Tim. He’s pretty dumb. Not pretty yet dumb, just dumb and ugly. Imagine if Cholera took human form, lived as a tramp for 40 years and got hit by a succession of articulated lorries – that’s Tim.

Some words about why we like this album.

Get it on Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – Highway Patrol Stun Gun

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

The Decemberists – What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World

what a terrible There was some dispute in the SGTMT office about the release date of this album. Spotify says 2014 but other more reliable sources (everywhere else) says 2015. So there we go. Just in case you were asking the same question, now you know. It’s a fact. A fact that has been checked.

It’s great btw.

Buy it on Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – Cavalry Captain

Listen to the whole thing on Spotify:

Empress of – Me

empress of We first got excited about Empress Of back in September. We asked them to send us a free album. One of those limited edition vinyls. Maybe a limited edition coloured vinyl. That would be nice.

They didn’t though. I know. Are you seeing my unhappy face? ARE YOU?

It’s on Amazon.

If you only listen to one song make it – Water Water
