Keep an eye on: IYES

January 14, 2013

SGTMT HQ is in uproar. Seriously people, a revolution is brewing on Acacia Road and only one thing can stop us going all 1917 / Chairman Mao. ‘What happened?’ I hear you holler. Well, it went like this; our venerable and widely respected new tunes hack Tom wrote this startling statement on the twitter: ‘I haven’t heard any good new music all year’. Now granted the year is just two weeks old but still, a music drought for Tom is bad news for us all. His grump around the breakfast table is now explained…

So, what must one do at such a moment of crisis with a brother? Well, here’s a life lesson people, listen up – when Tom needs help, help Tom shall have. With no further ado we set about the wide worlding internets looking for ‘Tom’s new favourite band’. We searched and soundclouded (see how I made a noun into a verb there?), trawled through blogs and let the Hype Machine have it’s say and finally thanks to a Brooklyn blog came across a band from my own city of Brighton; IYES.

IYES were formed as recently as November 2012 and currently we can find only one tune in their catalogue, but crumbs it’s a beaut.

All people’s of the known universe (including Tom), keep an eye on IYES. The hollow, dark moods of Lighthouse initially gently draw you into the tune, but then add the soaring vocals and then finally the rippling synths lap into the song like the tide creeps onto those infernal pebbles on Brighton beach, all mixed with the repeated refrain ‘What else can I do?’. Wow. This is why electricity was combined with instruments. We’re fans, you should be too.

Find IYES on SoundCloud and Facebook and on the Twitter
