St. Lucia – September

September 22, 2012

You kids love the Drakensberg Boys Choir right? Thought so. You see, in terms of this artist at least, all roads lead back to the Drakensberg Boys Choir School.

Though the PR blurb will trumpet that Jean-Philip Grobler resides in hipster capital Brooklyn, JP’s roots run all the way back across distant oceans to the bustling, but somewhat different metropolis of Johannesburg. Oddly, the isle of St Lucia seems to play no part in the history of JP (we can call him that right?).

Anyways, I won’t regurgitate all of JP’s history; I’m tired, I hate pretending to be an actual journalist (it means I have to actually think about what I write and stuff, BOOORRRRINNGGG), and you can read it all on his Facebook.

To cut a medium length story to a twitter sized one, JP left South Africa and ended up in New York. He became St. Lucia and then did this:

St. Lucia’s debut album comes out on Neon Gold later this year. You can get his debut EP on Vinyl from Amazon or on MP3 on iTunes

  1. Ephraim Zimbalist says:

Ah Matt, Matt, we’ve been here before, and I shouldn’t encourage you. Content should triumph over form … but I love your form. I swear, I came upon this by accident. And one day, be assured, I will drift away and be lost on the vast sea of the interweb. But until that day ….

OK, the music itself sounded like logs rolling down the steps of the Sacre Coeur, and then crushing Jean Michel Jarre’s iPod into random action. Oh, and then there were some mannered vocals a la Human League. No disrespect. I am obviously a Philistine. But hey, you have to speak as you find. I am sure the artist will never read this, and so not be crushed beyond recovery.
