I don’t often listen to Dutch Folk music. Partly because I don’t tend to listen to music from the Netherlands (there ain’t much of it around see) and also because I don’t often listen to folk. Understand? Complex reasoning I know…
However, I Am Oak has taken my fancy. Maybe it’s because their name makes no sense, though I guess it’s catchier than I Am Horse-Chesnut or I Am Quercus (a joke for Naturalist readers of SGTMT, by ‘Naturalists’ I mean people who like nature, not people who take their clothes in public spaces. Thought I’d mention that to avert any unfortunate confusion).
I Am Oak is not actually just one tree anyway, but a mini-forest of a band built around Thijs Kuijken (no idea how to pronounce that). In July they released Nowhere Or Tammensaari to much acclaim and Reins is the latest single from the album. Enjoy:

Oh, come on. You guys are just too hilarious to be stranded in a not-for-real-profit music review site. This is a huge hoax, right? You are really the writers of The Big Bang Theory, on a sabbatical.
“I don’t often listen to Dutch Folk music ….”. “Maybe it’s because their name makes no sense”. Internal injuries are being sustained here. I can’t laugh loudly because the household is asleep. More fool them when there is material of this quality to be viewed. And I am not just talking about your verbiage – this track by ‘I am Oak’ (and don’t we all wish for wood) has great production values, I like it, it smoothly swings along, it’s in English and it’s grammatical, but I have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what it means. Does that matter? Discuss, using only one side of the paper. “Somewhere in between the taste of brackish water …. ” Yes, yes, but does that move the dialogue along? But I love the vocal mix, and the sound is so rich. I plan to play it at our next young persons’ party, and anyone who claims to “get it” or “know where it’s coming from” will be instantly defenestrated.
Oh Matt, the second paragraph of your piece above just can’t be improved upon. Retire now, you may never best yourself. Look, where do you FIND all this sh*t? When the rest of the industry is content just to recycle whatever the celebs or redtops hand them …. ah, I despair. Not, no really, because you have given me hope. No lie, GI.
It’s so dispiriting that there is so much great music out there, and mostly we see only the fraction that is pushed out by The Machine. Oh, that’s not what I meant to say – yes, I am an insomniac (after about fifty, you find you don’t really need eight hours), and I scribble stuff all over the Internet. Isn’t that what it’s there for?
Who said ‘not-for-real-profit’? We’re desperate for profit. Sadly, our attempts to ‘monetize’ our site have raised the grand total of £40 over 18 months. Consequently we’ve had to downgrade the SGTMT HQ to a disused Branflakes packet. Embarrassingly we couldn’t even afford the more standard cardboard box. The kids need food, poor Tom is living off half diluted Beroccas and smoked fish feet. HELP.
