Oh, great. Now the whole world thinks British music is run by Jessie J.
Team SGTMT are determined to remain in our bubble of Olympic Spirit for as long as possible. We’re talking to people in the street, we’re being nice to strangers, and we’re going to hang onto our positivity because we’re not ready to slide back into our cynicism just yet.
This has been a wonderful two-and-a-bit-weeks hasn’t it? We were lucky enough to attend some events, including a morning inside the Olympic Stadium to watch people run and throw things, but mainly we stayed glued to TVs and minute-by-minute updates on our phones.
We’ve seen some amazing things being done by amazing people. As well as being proud to be British, we’ve been overwhelmed by seeing people of whatever nationality explore the limits of human performance, give their event their all from training to finish line, praise the people who have supported them, pay credit to their opponents, lose with grace and win with humility.
We’re filled with an admiration for the human race which had been buried beneath racism court cases, irresponsible bankers and riots. People, we remember, are amazing.
The Olympic Games Closing Ceremony was sent as a strong challenge to our new found positivity. We think we’ve just about made it through. As ‘A symphony of British music’ it didn’t really cut it, and now the world must think that Jessie J and Emeli Sandé are the best we have to offer.
The truth is, British music is incredible and horrendous in equal measure, much like any other country’s. At SGTMT we like to think that the ratio leans more towards the incredible in Britain than it does in many other countries though. We just don’t show it off at this sort of event.
It looks like it’s down to SGTMT to do the showing off, so here goes. From Kingston-Upon-Thames in South-West London, this is Alpines:
Cor. Now why weren’t Alpines included in the ceremony? Along with the heaps of other talented British artists who would have done so much better than Ed Sheeran, or Kaiser Chiefs. Kaiser Chiefs! Given the way it turned out, we imagine they’re relieved they weren’t involved actually. Gosh what a disaster eh?! Still, chin up! We’re still smiling!
Chances is taken from Alpines’ forthcoming Early Hours EP.

Wow, a very powerful track. Thanks for posting this, looking forward to the EP!
I laughed, I cried – you have really nailed the art of writing reviews/comments or just generally thoughts about life. This is what Mr Berners-Lee had in mind when he invented the Internet. Not spam from finance companies or employment agencies. Many thanks, and regards. (I have also seen your later piece about Sub Focus/Alpines – if anything, that is even better as regards humorous impact. I may sue you for the costs of dry cleaning my computer chair, and for counselling for my cats – they freaked out when I had hysterics.)
And, I admit it, Ephraim is not my real name. Do you care? Thought not.
Oh, and I’ve given a false email address, too.
But just like to say that I do rate Ms Sande, and not just because Alpines have done a cover of ‘Heaven’, which I like muchly. Along with Florence and (sadly) the lately departed Ms Winehouse, we have lately been blessed with female vocal, which is what I like. Plus early Rod Stewart. But musically, I like everything from LZ to BOC to QOTSA. Oh, and it’s a given – Kate Bush rules. Go out and buy Aerial, now. Forget any prejudices …. it’s amazing.
