Bat for Lashes – Laura (single and video)

July 23, 2012

Natasha Khan aka Bat for Lashes, then. This is her first appearance on the blog (she’ll be delighted). Why the delay? We’ve been waiting for something really nice, like Laura:

Here at SGTMT we’re a sucker for an intensely tender vocal performance with minimum accompaniment. Bat for Lashes has such a wonderful voice, but it’s all the better for the moments when it sounds like she’s struggling to control it. Who likes perfectly polished vocals? Not us, we like human, we don’t like autotune (unless it’s ironic). Nice video too:

The single is taken from Bat for Lashes’ forthcoming The Haunted Man LP, the artwork for which is here (CAREFUL KIDS, SHE’S IN THE NIP!) Cor.

She’s off on tour across Europe in September, October and November and we think we’ll swing by a show or two:

09-02 – Stradbally, Ireland – Electric Picnic
09-09 – Isle of Wight, England – Bestival
10-18 – Inverness, Scotland – Ironworks
10-19 – Edinburgh, Scotland – Picture House
10-21 – Glasgow, Scotland – O2 ABC
10-22 – Manchester, England – Cathedral
10-25 – Leeds, England – Metropolitan University
10-26 – Norwich, England – University of East Anglia
10-28 – Leicester, England – O2 Academy
10-29 – London, England – Forum
11-01 – Birmingham, England – HMV Institute
11-02 – Bristol, England – Anson Rooms
11-03 – Portsmouth, England – Pyramids
11-04 – Brighton, England – Dome Concert Hall
11-15 – Berlin, Germany – Huxleys
11-18 – Zurich, Switzerland – Rotefabrik
11-19 – Milan, Italy – Alcatraz
11-20 – Lausanne, Switzerland – Les Docks
11-22 – Barcelona, Spain – Apolo
11-23 – Madrid, Spain – Teatro Kapital
11-25 – Paris, France – Le Trianon
11-26 – Lille, France – Le Spendid
11-27 – Amsterdam, Netherlands – Paradiso

Laura is released tomorrow on Parlophone. The Haunted Man LP is due on the same label on October 15th. That is a long time to wait for sure. Sigh.

Bat for Lashes’ “Laura” is a stunningly beautiful song that instantly embeds itself into your brain but I wonder if Natasha Khan has been drinking the “Lana Del Rey” Kool-Aid, (not that this is a bad thing)- as “Laura” sounds like a more polished ghostly incarnation of “Video Games”. The similarity in tone and chordal shifts made me think of Miss Lana instantly. Even some of the phrasings in the enticing melody makes “Laura” seems like “Video Games” big sister. It makes me wonder if the exquisitely beautiful “Laura” was somehow inspired by the rough around the edges “Video Games.” Is it better to be the muse or the art? In the end, a million adoring Bats for Lashes fans will be too busy feeling the song instead of thinking about it… and maybe that is how it should be.
