There’s something about music which isn’t quite all there that really does it for us.
Music with wonderful melodies that are buried beneath intentionally muddy production. Or music that sounds like it’s performed perfectly, but recorded in a room down the hall. We like music that hints at what it’s going after rather than sitting us down and spelling it all out for us. For some reason it gets a stronger reaction than something just as good but more straightforward.
We don’t like obvious.
Not Alone from LA-based four-piece Adored is a case in point. It has a wonderfully textured lead-guitar refrain and a cracking vocal melody, but you have to practically strain your ears to hear it. We love it.
