A few years ago I headed to London Brixton Academy to see Gnarls Barkley with a friend who had two unexpected guestlist slots. We were meant to be going out for dinner, so this was a change of plan.
I wasn’t expecting a good show, I thought their St. Elsewhere LP was alright but nothing special. I’ll accept almost any invitation to see live music, however, so I was in.
What unfolded was one of the most entertaining shows I’d seen in ages. Fancy dress, a heap of fun and exuberance, and Cee-Lo Green‘s oversized powerful voice. Ever since then I’ve had a little soft spot for the big man.
You may have missed I Want You from Cee-Lo’s The Lady Killer LP. It features a wonderful performance from the horn section, an engaging chorus and a tremendous bridge. Or coda. Or middle eight. I never know which is which.
I like a powerful horn section.
