A year in blog #3

We may have gone a little over the top with our birthday ‘festivities’ this week. Apologies. Most blogs / websites probably don’t even notice when birthday time comes round and if they do I’d imagine it only warrants a tweet or other passing reference.

We’ve marked our first birthday with our very own mixtape split into Side A and Side B. Also our 2 other contributors have looked back on a year of blogging and listed their top 5 tunes they’ve posted; Read Tim’s here and Tom’s here. Now it’s my turn.

A year in blogging has unearthed some great music, much of which I’d probably have never discovered otherwise. The bulging inbox of awfulness is a horrible side product of music blogging, but tunes like the below make it all worthwhile.

This demo from Daughter dropped into my inbox right at the start of 2011 and remains one of my favourites of the year. At the time I wrote: The ‘run’ chorus is captivating and the lyrics sweetly endearing, yet troubled and dark. 8 months later I still love it:

Breton have become one of our favourite new bands on SGTMT warranting several posts and a live review. We like ‘em. We gave away RDI back in November last year.

In May this year we stumbled across The Jezabels at Brighton’s Great Escape Festival and they’ve been on almost permanent play on the SGTMT stereo ever since.

I’m fairly certain that Other lives are just about go huge in the UK. You watch. Huge I say. We blogged them back in April and adore this track:

When one of my favourite bands remixes another of my favourite bands I’ve learnt to be disappointed. However Clock Opera‘s rework of The Bay by Metronomy is easily the best remix of 2011. Fact.
