Anyone want to hear a totally ridiculous quote? Here we go; “I can’t think of anyone better than The Savage Nomads to rock the whole world” Mick Jones, The Clash. I’m not even making that up, Mick Jones actually said that.
Now hyperbole comes in many shapes and sizes but the worst and most grotesquely exaggerated kind usually seems to be formed of ill thought and incoherent utterances from ex-rock stars. What does it even mean for a band to rock the whole world? Is Mick suggesting that they will attain a Beatles esque level of fame that will mean every teenager, on every street corner, in every city will have heard of them? Or perhaps our sense-lacking friend believes their music literally contains the power to make the entire plant reverberate? To but it mildly, neither are credible claims.
Nevertheless, The Savage Nomads aren’t to be written of because of one old man’s delusional beliefs. These London teenagers have produced several sparkling ditties that don’t conform to a lot of the rules and styles currently prevalent in the UK indie scene. They’ll probably get dumped into the ‘post/punk’ genre because we bloggers tend to do that to anyone young with a distorted guitar but let’s not pigeon hole these guys just yet. You only have to check out Pineapple and A Dire Love (included below) to realise that our nomadic chumps aren’t afraid to step out of the indie comfort zones and create something very new and oddly endearing. Maybe Mad Mick had a point after all…
On May 16th they release The Magic Eye (below). Listen and enjoy.
