Origin – Kata Rokkar comes from the Bay area (San Francisco not Whitby) and they’ve been blogging since August 2008.
Frequency and style – KR posts about 3 to 4 times a week and focuses mostly (though not exclusively) on music & events in the Bay area making this our first location specific blog. Exciting.
Platform – WordPress
Music taste – As described above, their taste kinda flows from their area (SF Bay) and most of it falls into the folk / alternative / indie world.
Recent artists covered – Nicole Atkins, Christopher Willits, Blackbird Blackbird, Ólafur Arnalds, Westwood & Willow
SGTMT verdict – A music blog from San Francisco with an Icelandic name and run by a stand-up comedian. Could it possibly be true? Well, it is and despite the Bjork inspiration (I’m sorry but she sings like a constipated Seagull) it’s a great blog.
One of the richest features of KR has to be the photography, take a look at this review to see what I mean. This adds to what is a positively simple (it looks like a blog) and pleasingly designed blog. However, it’s not just a good looker, KR digs out some great music and from all over the shop, in all sorts of styles.
Probably my favourite thing about KR is the Bay area focus. Like a good Sussex Ale, Melton Pie or Philly Steak there is a distinctive and unusual flavour to it that might be initially confusing to the palette but is ultimately a winner. They don’t just feature music but give you a much broader feel of San Fran life and they dig out some gold from local bands we’d have never otherwise heard of. We need more blogs like Kata Rokkar.
Honourable mention – Knox Road
