In case you’ve missed it this post forms part of an ongoing series on SGTMT – A to Z of Music Blogs. We begun with; Andygoesdowntochinatown and then; Battle of the Midwestern Housewives and this week ‘c’.
Today we introduce – Chocolate Bobka
Origin – Chocolate Bobka has been live since April 2007 (another blog grandad) and comes out of New York, USA.
Frequency and style – The Bobka pumps them out 4 to 5 times a week. I’m not sure how to describe the style of this blog, the oddball but somehow stylish look of it kinda sums up the whole blog. The text is green and the links are pink but somehow it looks good.
Platform – Blogspot
Music taste – Weird / experimental Electronica, peculiar remixes galore and other odd musical genius.
Recent artists covered – d’Eon, Shelley Duvall, James Ferraro, Linda Hagood, Nike7Up.
SGTMT verdict – At first look and listen Chocolate Bobka seems like the blog equivalent of an acid trip gone wrong or one of those bad dreams where everyone is a Samurai trained fluorescent lizard trying to eat your intestines (or is it only me that’s had that dream?). However, at second glance the unique qualities of this blog make it first intriguing and then even addictive.
It’s well written, nicely designed (despite the pinkness) and full of innovation; you’re never quite sure if you’re listening to music that everyone will be listening to in 5 years time or music that will still sound as bizarre in 100 years as it does now.
The focus of this blog is by no means narrow, there is loads of varied, great music here but I imagine that unless you live in a particular area of New York you’ll have never heard of 99% of the artists on here, and that’s probably C Bob’s greatest strength -it’s bohemian distinctiveness. Take a visit.
Honourable mention – Chipped Hip
