Most often when you discover a new band you instantly pigeon hole them; they fit in the ‘indie rock’ pigeon hole or the ‘sounds like an angry Bloc Party’ pigeon hole. Sometimes, just sometimes you really don’t know how to file them, no category or equivalent seems to exist. That’s good, very good. BRETON are one of those bands, the only pigeon hole they fit in is the ‘undecided’ or ‘down right super good’ hole.
Their soon to be released Counter Balance EP has everything and anything. The title track Counter Balance has a dark foreboding and a measured beat, it almost sounds like early DJ Shadow but without the samples (just some random mutterings about a causeway…). December is somewhat different, strings, electronica and clashing cymbals. The sort of noise your printer makes when it gets jammed and you throw it down the stairs, in a good way of course.
RDI, the track below, is all cute guitar riffs and heavy synths, then the dubstep drops in. Love it. Throw in some Local Natives style harmonies and more twiddly knob electronic sounds and you have a cult classic.
In closing, SGTMT likes Breton. Easily the most daring, original and innovate band breaking through in the UK at present and the best new act we’ve reviewed so far.
